Does Organizational Health Matter?
According to various studies and expert analyses, a significant percentage (60% to 85%) of churches in America are either plateaued or in decline. Additionally, only a fraction of Evangelical churches (10% to 15%) have the necessary financial resources, leadership, and volunteer base to support a church plant without overextending themselves. In short: most churches aren't growing and most churches aren't planting more churches. Why are the majority of American churches seeing such challenges related to growth and vitality? Should we simply blame our rapidly secularizing culture? Or, is it possible many good churches that believe the Bible, have sound theology, and want to reach their community with the gospel, are neglecting something really important?

At COMPASS, we believe churches that want to reach more people and plant more churches need to, first and foremost, be spiritually healthy. However, we also believe ministry effectiveness is much higher in churches that are organizationally healthy too. Organizational health is the term used to refer to an organization's ability to operate effectively, grow sustainably and adapt to change. Organizationally healthy churches benefit from greater clarity. They generally enjoy higher levels of unity. And they often reach more people for Christ and plant more churches. So, why don't more churches invest time and resources in achieving organizational health?

Organizational health is often neglected because Christians rightfully want to avoid importing business practices into church ministry. But, God wants His people to be organized. In fact, the Bible reveals a pattern of increased organization leading to increased ministry effectiveness (e.g., Ex. 18:1-27 & Acts 6:1-7). Additionally, organizational health was not invented by the business world; the business world borrowed it from general revelation. That's where churches find it too. The Westminster Divines said there are aspects of ministry that are, "...common to human actions and societies, [and] are to be ordered by the light of nature…” (WCF 1.6). In other words, some aspects of healthy church leadership overlap with healthy leadership practices found in other societal entities (companies, schools, hospitals, governments, etc.). We learn many important aspects of life and ministry (math, geography, etc.) from general revelation. And that's where we learn how to be more organized too.
COMPASS can guide your church’s leadership through a process that will put your church on a course toward greater organizational health and, Lord willing, greater ministry effectiveness. We will help you answer six critically important questions (inspired by organizational health expert, Patrick Lencioni): Why do we exist? What do we do? How do we behave? How will we succeed? What’s most important, right now? and Who must do what? When we’re done, your church will be ready to move forward with much more clarity, unity, and excitement as you seek to faithfully follow Jesus and make Him known among your neighbors and the nations.
